Etched in Bone A Novel of the Others Anne Bishop 9780451474490 Books

It’s with deep sadness that I bid adieu to one of my f-a-v-o-u-r-i-t-e series. But, don’t despair just yet, Anne Bishop has announced that she will be returning to THE OTHERS world in 2018! I enjoyed ETCHED IN BONE considerably more than book 4 because the scope of the story was much narrower which means that we get lots of Meg & Simon, and less of the rest of Thaisia. The plot was also milder in nature, and that was both a plus and a minus. Yay on account of it being more character driven, and nay since things end with a whisper instead of a bang.

The focal point of this novel was Cyrus James Montgomery. He’s a con artist, and sees Lakeside as easy pickings because he has an in with his brother, mother and sister already in residence. Jimmy’s presumptuous, arrogant, and just plain daft if he believes that he can hide behind human laws in the Courtyard. The terra indigene mete out their own brand of justice; it’s ugly and barbaric, and in my opinion the punishments fit the crimes. CJ’s schemes escalate until he does the unthinkable. A shot to the heart would have probably hurt less!

The citizens are busy picking up the pieces of whatever is left in the wake of Namid’s claws and teeth. Cel-Romano has practically fallen off the map, most of the land has been reclaimed by the wild country, and food rations abound in the surviving cities. The Simple Life folk and the Intuits are thriving, and the cassandra sangue are still a work-in-progress, but for the average human, life is hard. Meg’s female pack make inroads with the Others by breaking bread together for the first time, and two Elders observe it all like some twisted science experiment.

The author doesn’t yank the rug out from under us as far as epiphanies go although, she does touch upon a few items that readers have been musing over such as what happens when a prophet’s old scars are reopened. There were also several delightful moments which I’d found to be lacking in the previous volume. Skippy will surprise you, and Corbyn makes a HUGE faux pas—I’m pretty sure that she only lives to tell the tale due to the fact that she’s the howling not-Wolf. And, yes, something DOES happen between Simon & Meg on the romantic front however, don’t set your hopes too high because… baby steps!

Anne Bishop could have probably written ten more books in this series, and I still wouldn’t be entirely content, but overall ETCHED IN BONE was a happy finale.

Etched in Bone A Novel of the Others Anne Bishop 9780451474490 Books Reviews

Etched in Bone is the fifth book in "The Others" series wrote by Anne Bishop. You absolutely must read the previous books, or you will be hopelessly lost. The characters and world-building have been carefully built up by Bishop in each book.

The first book in this series was magic, and the reason was the small village of the Others, the characters in and around the compound and Meg. Book 5 revisits that magical formula. Because the focus of the story narrows back to Meg and her friends, the book becomes an awesome treat and an excellent way to close out this groundbreaking series. For some reason it is harder to write a good review about a book than a bad one. With a bad review you can point to particular instances you didn't like, but with a good review you just know you liked it! And did I ever! Closing the book made me sad it had ended, but I was completely satisfied with my reading experience which kept me up half the night and involved me reading every single word and savoring it as I would an excellent steak or a glass of high-end champagne.

BTW, the publisher sets the price of the book, and for a copy and paste job, it is very high priced. However, I consider Bishop's brilliance to be worth every penny, and I hope the publisher who gouged us is in turn taken to the cleaners when it comes time to renegotiate Bishop's contract.
Okay, okay, okay. I have been putting this book off for a bit. I got nervous after reading reviews. So...I put it off for a bit til I joined a Facebook group all things Others. They convinced me to dooo eeeeit! So...I read it. I am so glad I did I wasnt disappointed like I thought I would be when it came to Simon and Meg. Not even close!

This book was a little different and yes everything moved a little slow with the book on figuring out what was happening next but it never deterred me from going on and keep finishing. I obsessively couldnt put it down unless I had to. This will contain spoilers and its been out for awhile I think its safe. So, if you dont want to read further I understand.

Monty's brother is a sick dude! Its disgusting how much his son Clarence was learning from him. His poor daughter Francis. Even she was taking on some not great characteristics but moving on. I understand why people were upset that this whole situation with Cyrus was dragged out. It was in a way because honestly if it was up to Simon he wouldnt have made it past the first day. However, the Elders stepped in and it was a disaster throughout the book. Monty's sister Sierra...really? That girl is DAMAGED with a capital D. She was so mentally abused by her brother Cyrus it went on too long and Monty and Twyla enabled her too much. Sierra even put her brother Cyrus before her own kids...even warnings from Simon and Vlad and everyone else. She just didnt get it. She was too messed up. She ended up leaving in the night with her kids and perhaps that was a good thing. She needed away from Cyrus in a big way. Monty never really came around to his sister's ways although he was angry with her but Mama Twyla did. Tough love y'all. I just love Simon and Meg's relationship and what it could become. Its not a traditional relationship like we have or even experienced with other shifters. Its more subtle and slow. I was glad it was finally acknowledged they were potential mates. They have some so very sweet moments. I loved them at the end. I dont think it could have been any better. I know she is doing more Others but no more books on Simon and Meg but I do hope we get news about everyone in the others books at least.

One thing is I wished things were tied up a little better at the end with all the other characters and what their future might be. Then again perhaps she'll touch more on things at a later date. I also think Cyrus could have done some different things. He was too easily caught and he just kept doing the same dumb things. He was a desperate man and total nutjob. He had a messy ending but well deserved!

I am not sure about the next book Lake Silence. I might wait to see what people think of it and how it pans out before I pick it up. Spin offs are different and it probably wont have the same feel as this series.
