Charleston John Jakes Books

Jakes has the ability to make you feel as though you are living history as you turn each page. Having visited Charleston several times, I could walk the streets with his characters. I had no idea how really cruel some of the Charleston slave owners were. They were governed by fear and their fear destroyed them and their city. Fortunately, Charleston has recovered and is once again a beautiful place to live in or visit. I happened to be reading the scene about a hurricane that struck just at the time the recent hurricane struck the city. It was a coincidence, but showed how really vulnerable that city can be! An eye-opening read.

Charleston John Jakes Books Reviews

Charleston really went back to the beginning of the Civil War and put a lot of things in line, also explaining of the way things were written and incorporated into the book, give history life for me. I loved the way the South's points were put in there and how a lot of people given the choice would have never changed the way things were back then.
Having visited Charleston several times, I was was interested in its history. Several natives of Charleston recommended this book as a glimpse of its past to maybe give me a better understanding of its present. It accomplished that. I was not aware of the involvement during the time of the British, the Revolutionary war, and how that event molded the people and the history of Charleston. The hatred for the North and the pressure from South Carolina to separate from the Union and begin the Civil War was also very evident. Makes you appreciate that Charleston survived, and I better understand the people that have such pride and work so tirelessly to preserve its history. From this book, I can understand that better. I thought the main characters were very real. Hard times make for hard people, and even heroes have flaws. I felt like I had a history lesson along with a very good "read".
It Started To Get A Little Dull In The Story
Book was expensive for a kindle book. It was not set up for ease of reading on kindle. No content or page breaks for Chapters or point of view. History seemed accurate.
Jakes is always a great way to increase you knowledge about a certain historical time/place. I found the characters in this book not as well developed as in others. Still a good read.
As an avid John Jakes fan, I was quite disappointed in this book. At first I was about to quit reading it but being a fan, I continued on and was glad I did. Lack of detail in this book created a lot of confusion as to who was who and it was hard to keep many of the characters in mind without having to go back to find out who they were. Although not as well written as most of his books, the story line overall was good and I really enjoyed the ending. I give it a 3 star rating because I can't honestly say I like the way it was written, knowing Jakes can do so much better.
John Jakes is one of the greatest historical fiction writers of our time. With so many great books to his name, it would be easy to expect a later work to disappoint. However, Jakes is still at his best. The storyline is richly detailed, as is the historical research.
