The breadth of Sachdeva's imagination is staggering in this sharp, creative collection of short stories, whose prose soars. This was a perfect book club pick, as there were so many layers to her prismatic work -- feminist, fabular, mystical. I've never read anything quite like this book before, with its outrageous plot lines and observations about staring straight at the unknowable forces that shape our lives, be they nature, religion, science.
Excellent from start to finish. Each story is so carefully crafted, so easily relatable, and written with such richness I felt myself a little more put together and a little more undone after each one. Gave me some Black Mirror vibes at some points so if youre a fan of that series, you may very well like this.
Every story an original. A wonderful read.
I can't quite put my head around this book, but I know it's nothing like I've ever read before. I found the stories strange and beautiful and horrifying. The writing is entrancing and gorgeous. I ate it up like a bowl of soup.
Dang if this collection didn’t convince me I should read more short stories. Then again, storytelling of this caliber is far and few between. The breadth of Sachdeva’s imagination is incredible one moment, you’re alone with a spelunking Albino; the next, you’re watching as your fellow citizens duly accept a bizarre physical modification enforced (enforked?) upon them by alien invaders. Other subjects include a mermaid, a man with a glass lung and a divining rod, and, in the titular story, two captives of Boko Haram. And it’s all done so lyrically, with a mythical tilt. Definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year (much better, for instance, than The Mars Room, which I’d read just before)—and the pages go by as quickly as ideas and imagery within them linger.
How I have enjoyed this new entry into the Science Fiction genre, All the Names They Used for God!

Ms. Anjali Sachdeva, in All the Names They Used for God, has brought a new and fresh way of encountering the social issues of the day. Her short story, Manus, is a great example. I used Manus for an 11th grade class focused on catholic social justice. I did have to black out a few words here and there. Manus maps wonderfully into Catholic Social Principles such as Life and Dignity of the Human Person, The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers and Solidarity. What a new and invigorating way to discuss the future!
These short stories will leave you breathless. While reading, you'll find yourself looking up at the clock to notice another hour has gone by as you've gotten more and more engrossed in the stories.They're smart, funny, sad, and quite heavy at times. My book club selected this and everyone loved it, making it a front-runner for favorite book of the year. 10/10!
